Romania

In 1992, three members of EAAF traveled to Romania at the request of the Bucharest prosecutor’s office to investigate a mass grave discovered in the town of Caciulati, located 17 km from Bucharest. It was suspected that the grave might contain prisoners taken by the Securitate, the secret police that operated in Romania during the Communist era, which had an operational base at the site of the findings.

EAAF’s team conducted an archaeological excavation of the graves, uncovering 20 skeletons and associated material. The arrangement of the bodies and the materials found suggested that this was a historical cemetery rather than a Securitate site – a conclusion confirmed by local archaeologists.
