At the request of the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), EAAF conducted a mission to Morocco in 2006 to do a technical assessment of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission’s forensic work in investigating the disappearances and deaths that occurred between 1956 and 1999, mostly during the reign of Hassan II. It is estimated that state forces tortured, exiled or forcibly disappeared some 9,000 illegally detained Moroccans in that period.
As part of its consulting work, EAAF guided interviews with victims’ families and local human rights organizations. It also recommended a series of changes to forensic investigation processes and techniques to raise local standards.
In 2016, EAAF returned to Morocco at the request of the Euro-Mediterranean Federation against Enforced Disappearances (FEMED), to conduct training on archaeology and antemortem data collection for the search for detained-disappeared persons. Participants included human rights activists, family members, doctors and lawyers.
