From 2009 to the present, at the invitation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), EAAF has participated in the ongoing training of local technical staff who are part of the Mass Graves Directprate of the Baghdad Medico-Legal Directorate (MLD), and in the technical assessment of needs for improvement in both technical aspects and the management of corpses and information. In 2015, EAAF also participated in training activities for forensic physicians from Erbil and Dohuk, in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The ICRC’s long-term strategy for strengthening local capabilities has resulted in the ongoing training of more than 50 forensic specialists, with the participation of EAAF and others. Several members of the MLD-Baghdad Mass Graves department also received training at EAAF’s African School of Humanitarian Forensic Action in South Africa.
The most recent mission to Iraq took place in February 2026.
