Following the assassination of President Juvenal Habyarimana in an attack on April 6, 1994, one of Africa’s bloodiest massacres took place. Members of the Hutu community attacked members of the Tutsi community, a minority group. It is estimated that more than 800,000 people died.
In 2014, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established in Burundi to investigate these cases; to date, it has mapped more than 4,000 mass graves and located over 142,000 victims of the violence. EAAF conducted several missions to Burundi to provide consulting on the search for missing persons and on aspects related to the recovery of bodies buried in mass graves.
