Training
EAAF provides training aimed at improving the quality of forensic investigations in accordance with international standards while also strengthening local capacities for investigating human rights violations, femicides and other crimes. Furthermore, through these training programs, EAAF positively impacts local and regional mechanisms for searching for and identifying missing persons and strengthens ties among the stakeholders involved in forensic investigation processes.
TOPICS, TARGET AUDIENCES AND FORMATS
The training topics cover the various stages of EAAF’s work when intervening in cases: documentary research, interviews with family members and collection of antemortem data, search, handling of the scene of the findings and evidence recovery, postmortem analysis, DNA, the identification process, reconciliation of results and interpretations from each line of the investigation – including any specific studies required, such as ballistics, entomology, stable isotopes and others – and the preparation of integrated reports. In addition, EAAF provides training on investigating and documenting complex cases and on applying internationally recognized protocols to scenarios where human rights violations and femicides or gender identity-based crimes are being investigated.
The training is aimed particularly at expert professionals such as judges, prosecutors, judicial system personnel, forensic experts and members of security forces. Furthermore, EAAF trains civil society organizations, associations of families, journalists and other stakeholders.
EAAF operates an International Center for Training in Forensic Sciences, located at its central headquarters inside the Espacio Memoria y Derechos Humanos complex in Buenos Aires, Argentina, coordinating in-person and virtual courses that reach professionals worldwide. It also offers training in various countries organized by its regional divisions, using both in-person and virtual formats.
International organizations, forensic services from numerous countries, organizations of magistrates and prosecutors, special mechanisms for identification, and other parties regularly request training from EAAF, which is often tailored to their specific needs and requirements.
