Between January 1998 and July 2003, an ethnic conflict erupted in the Solomon Islands that escalated into a civil war, leaving many dead and missing.
At the request of the Solomon Islands Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), established to investigate what had occurred, EAAF undertook an initial mission in 2010 to assess forensic needs and provide training to security force members, prosecutors, commissioners and NGOs. In 2011, the Team traveled again to exhume and analyze four bodies at the TRC’s request. All four were identified at EAAF’s forensic genetics laboratory. The commission concluded its mandate in December 2011.
