Identification of Nine Missing Migrants in Mexico and the United States

Nine missing migrants were identified during June 2026 under the framework of Proyecto Frontera (Border Project), coordinated by the EAAF in Central and North America. The team has already notified their respective families of the identification of these nine individuals—seven originally from Guatemala and two from Mexico. To date, Proyecto Frontera has collaborated in the identification of 481 migrant individuals.

The bodies of seven of the identified migrants were recovered in the United States (six in Arizona, one in Texas) and one in Jalisco, Mexico. The ages of those identified range from 14 to 41 years old, though the majority were between 20 and 30. The dates of disappearance range from 2007 to 2025.

Proyecto Frontera is an initiative aimed at contributing to the creation of a transnational and regional system for the forensic search of missing migrants along the migration corridor of Central and North America. To achieve this, the EAAF coordinates the project in partnership with more than 100 governmental bodies and non-governmental organizations across the countries of this corridor.

Institutions participating in the identifications notified in June 2026 included, among others: the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner (Arizona, USA), the UNT Center for Human Identification at the University of North Texas (USA), the National Search Commission of Guerrero (Mexico), the Community Studies and Psychosocial Action Team of Guatemala, the Foundation for Justice and the Democratic Rule of Law (Mexico), the Asociación Pop No’j (Guatemala), the Jesuit Migrant Service of Guatemala, the Local Search Commission of Guerrero (Mexico), and the Search Commission of Puebla (Mexico).
